COWBERRY OR LINGONBERRY (Vaccinium vitis- idaea)
An evergreen Shrub growing to 0.25m by 1m. It is hardy and flowers from May to June, and the small red fruits, which are similar to cranberries, ripen from August to October.
The cowberry is self-fertile and is good for attracting wildlife. This plant prefers acid soils and can grow in very acid soil. It can grow in semi-shade, but will fruit better in a sunnier position.
In Scandinavia the berries are much used for jams and pubbings, Lingonberry soup being a favourite in Sweden. They are often served with meatballs and reindeer meat. I have made a good liqueur from them.
